Misprision of treason is a federal offense in the United States that occurs when someone who is loyal to the US learns of treasonous activity against the country but conceals that information and doesn’t report it. The offense is defined in 18 U.S. Code § 2382, which states that anyone who commits misprision of treason can be fined and/or imprisoned for up to seven years. The individual must be aware of the treason and conceal it, but they don’t need to have participated in the crime. They must also report the information to the President, a federal judge, a state governor, or a state judge as soon as possible.
